Finding the best retails merchant services is one part asking the right questions, and one part finding the right providers.

And whether you already accept credit cards or you need merchant services for the first time, finding the best retail merchant services can be a challenge.

Why is that?

Few companies use the same language.

What's more, there are hidden fees and confusing rate categories. And many business owners have admitted that they don't even bother checking their statement since they can't make heads or tails out of it.

So what can you do?

Seven Retail Merchant Services Questions to Ask

The needs of a retail business, when it comes to merchant accounts, is different from online merchant accounts for one important reason.

It comes down to your processing options: credit card terminal, POS system, or a card swiper attached to your computer or laptop.

With this in mind, let's look at the 7 questions you should ask.

In no particular order they are:

  1. Do you offer free equipment programs?
  2. Are there any early termination fees?
  3. What are the contract (or agreement) requirements?
  4. How long does it take for funds to reach my bank account?
  5. Are there any reserve requirements?
  6. Are the quoted rates guaranteed? If so, for how long?
  7. Do you have a free supplied program?

Some merchant account providers do offer free credit card terminals for new customers.

So it pays to ask.

Even if the don't you will want to avoid any credit card terminal leases.

If you have to buy the terminal just buy it for yourself. Just make sure it can be reprogrammed down the road should you switch to another processing company.

You will want to make sure there are no early termination fees, either.

Reserve requirements are typically used for high risk merchant accounts. Basically that means that a processing company may require that some of your processing volume (i.e. sales) are held back against possible chargebacks.

If there are any credit issues or your business is classified as high risk it's worth asking about.

When it comes to quoted rates you'll want to make sure that the deal you are agreeing to, the one that you signed up for, last longer than the amount of time it takes for the ink to dry.

So be sure that you have a good idea just how long the quoted rates will apply.

Finally, you'll need to...

thanks for the comment mfriedstore. for retail businesses it is very important that they find the best deals on business services, since they tend to have higher overhead costs than virtual businesses. in my book, anyway to boost profits is a good thing, as long as you don't have to sacrifice quality and/or service.

There's more to accepting credit cards -- whether you have multiple locations or you own a "mom and pop" business.

In fact, believe it or not asking "what's your rate?" over the phone is the LAST thing you should be thinking about, because there are multiple rates, fees and other charges depending on your type of business and how you want to accept credit cards.

Not to mention that quoted rates over the phone are often misleading, or only apply to your business 20% of the time.

    The key?

To get the best merchant account you need to talk with a solutions provider. You can learn more about merchant processing services by checking out some articles below:
